Scores composition and the poetics of presence

31st May 2024
Content: playful and focused approach to scores. Includes: movement sourcing, tuning scores,
ensemble states, authentic movement, instant composition and improvisation. For those
interested in performing and those interested in not performing (for example: discovering our
selves as improvisors, connecting with others through movement, deepening our movement
practice.

We start with connecting to our bodies and then take it into group explorations.
Getting lost. Composition as mediation. The material will range from compositional practice
to exploring the intangibles (curiosity, vulnerability, commitment, presence). We will work with
the spirit of exploration—not jumping to judgement /evaluation— and will learn as much by
watching each other as by being watched. While the aim is to practice composition and explore
the intangibles we will also undercut the hype of “performing” with the practice of witnessing.

Dive into Flying

1.&2. June 2024
Dive into Flying
(Diving is different than falling. Jumping ≠ flying. Nudging ≠ bumping.)
Lose your head to fly contact improvisation: Flight patterns, Fluid Acrobatics and Pure Contact
We will work for clear, satisfying contact improvisation in which pleasure is the first teacher. We
aim for the spectacular and the practical. We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid
acrobatics, deft maneuvers. We visit acrobatic and acroyoga styles and tweak them and find the
flow and freedom of contact improvisation. We will practice integrating the flying and acrobatics
into the contact flow. That is: aerial interactions that increase the contact.
Jumping ≠ Flying because jumping is is a muscular action, whereas flying is a joint nervous
system based and is affected greatly by emotions and attitude. We connect the flying to somatic.
We’ll do favorite contact exercises and current curiosities. created or learned over decades of
investigation and indulgence
